The Story Behind the Blackout: On February 23, 1945 — four days into the battle for Iwo Jima — Marines of the 5th Division’s 28th Regiment reached the summit of Mount Suribachi and raised the American flag. Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of that moment became the most reproduced image in the history of photography and the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial. But the flag raising was not the end.
