They were the only Marine division composed primarily of Reserve Marines, and they proved in the Pacific that Reserve doesn’t mean second. At Roi-Namur, they cleared the atoll in two days. At Saipan and Tinian, they fought through some of the most brutal close-quarters combat of the war. At Iwo Jima, they took the right flank of the island and held it at enormous cost. Four islands.
