Long before Chesty Puller, Sergeant Major Jiggs was the first mascot of the United States Marines.  Starting the long history of English bulldog mascots, he was adopted and then subsequently enlisted in the Corps by Brigadier General Smedley Butler, the two-time Congressional Medal of Honor winner and the most decorated Marine in U.S. history.

Jiggs' rose in the ranks rapidly, rocketing from Private all the way to Sergeant Major within a two year period. Although beloved by all Marines, Jiggs did exhibit an independent nature and was repeatedly court-martialed for breaches of etiquette and deportment, although he was always soon reinstated.

Jiggs led a pampered existence in the Marines, never far from the glow of publicity.  He even starred with Lon Chaney in the 1926 film "Tell It To The Marines" (pictured).  Memorialized in pictures, on-screen and with millions of tattoos, this tee honors Sergeant Major Jiggs, the trail-blazing canine "Devil Dog".
