The Story Behind the Brigade: The 4th Marine Brigade — composed of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments — arrived in France as part of the U.S. Army’s 2nd Division in 1917. At Belleau Wood in June 1918, they stopped the German advance cold and then drove them back in some of the most brutal close-quarters fighting of the entire war. The French renamed the wood Bois de la Brigade de Marine — Wood of the Marine Brigade — in their honor. The brigade went on to fight at Soissons, St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont Ridge, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, compiling a combat record that no Marine unit before or since has matched in a single war.
